What are AI agents and how do they work?

AI agents are software workers built on artificial intelligence that carry out business tasks autonomously: they receive an input, an enquiry, a document, an event in a system, decide what needs to be done, take the action across the tools they are connected to, and know when to involve a human.
An agent works through connected layers:
Understanding: a language model interprets the incoming message or event, in natural language, across languages
Knowledge: the agent draws on the company's own information, products, pricing, policies, past interactions, so its answers are specific rather than generic
Reasoning: it decides the appropriate action according to the rules and objectives it was given
Action: it executes across integrated systems, replying on WhatsApp, updating the CRM, booking the calendar, generating the quotation
Escalation: it hands defined situations to human staff, with the full context attached
The practical difference from earlier automation is judgment within boundaries: an agent handles the variation of real business conversations, different phrasings, languages and requests, while staying inside the guardrails set for it.
SJ Digital Media Solutions builds and deploys AI agents for businesses through a ready system with customisable solutions, developed along each client's actual workflow: the value chain is analysed from online to offline, the workflow is set up, agents are developed for the proven leak points and load points, then tested, trialled and deployed into live operations.
