What is SEO versus GEO?

SEO, search engine optimisation, is the practice of making a company visible in search engine results. GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of making a company visible in the answers generated by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Both pursue the same commercial outcome, being found at the moment of buyer intent, but they optimise for different systems.

The differences are structural:

  • Output: SEO wins a ranked position among ten blue links; GEO wins citation or recommendation inside a single synthesised answer

  • Selection logic: search engines rank pages by relevance and authority signals; AI assistants draw on sources they assess as authoritative, structured and directly responsive to the question asked

  • Content shape: SEO rewards keyword-aligned pages; GEO rewards clear questions answered in depth, structured content and demonstrated topical authority across a subject

  • Competitive dynamics: page two of search still exists; an AI answer that omits a company makes it invisible for that query

The two are complementary rather than sequential: strong SEO foundations feed GEO, because AI systems draw heavily on well-structured, authoritative web content.

SJ Digital Media Solutions builds both, with growing emphasis on GEO as buyers shift questions from search boxes to AI assistants. For its clients, and on its own platform, SJ develops structured knowledge bases, authoritative Q&A content and topical depth, then measures visibility directly across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, treating AI citation as a managed marketing channel rather than an accident.
